Despite its troubled Cyberpunk 2077 launch, Polish gaming studio CD Projekt Red recorded its best-ever financial year yet in 2020. Preliminary numbers from the company’s upcoming annual earnings report show how big Cyberpunk 2077 impacted the results in December.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, CD Projekt Red earned a record PLN 2.14 billion ($562 million) in sales revenue in 2020, this figure sees numbers more than quadrupled from what the company reported in 2019 and more than doubled what it recorded in 2015 when the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt helped the Polish gaming studio to a previous record of PLN 798 million ($210 million).
The company recorded a net profit of PLN 1.15 billion ($303 million) in 2020 which triples the previous record of PLN 342 million ($89.8) it had in 2015 also from the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Despite its disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the company was able to garner 8 million pre-order copies of the game thanks to its years of marketing and high expectation. Cyberpunk 2077 was the company’s last major project since it released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt back in 2015. Cyberpunk 2077 is also said to be the biggest digital game launch of all time having sold 10.2 million digital copies in December 2020. Despite Sony yanking the game off its PlayStation store, 80 per cent of the game’s total sale came from PC helping the Polish studio to these numbers.
CD Projekt Red recently outlined a new strategy it will be using going forward and promised to start working on multiple AAA games and expansions in parallel.
The final financial results for 2020 is expected to be released on April 22, 2021.
