WhatsApp today announced it has started rolling out voice status updates to users globally, and it will be available to everyone “in the coming weeks.” Currently, users on WhatsApp can share text, pictures, videos on their status updates, and the addition of voice messages adds a new dimension.

Every status update shared, including voice messages, will disappear after 24 hours, and WhatsApp also adds privacy options. Users can control who sees or listens to their voice status updates; the most recent audience settings will be saved as default for the next update.

“We’re introducing the ability to record and share voice messages up to 30 seconds on WhatsApp status,” WhatsApp shared in a blog post. “Voice status can be used for sending more personal updates, especially if you feel more comfortable expressing yourself by talking rather than typing.” Every user who has posted a status update will have a ring around their profile picture in chat lists, group participants, and contact info.

WhatsApp is also adding new features like status reactions and link previews. The company says status reactions was the “#1 feature users wanted” when reactions was rolled out last year. There are right emoji options users can quickly tap on to react to a WhatsApp status. Users who post links will also automatically see a preview of the content, just like when a message is sent.

WhatsApp recently rolled out an option that lets users messages themselves and the ability to undo accidental deletes.
