WhatsApp is introducing translations for messages directly in chats into other languages. The feature has started rolling out gradually, the Meta-owned company announced on Tuesday.
“With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world,” WhatsApp shared in a blog post. “But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier to getting things done or expressing how you truly feel. That’s why we’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages.”
Users will now be able to translate messages in 1:1 chats, groups, and Channel updates into any preferred language of their choice. To get started, simply long-press on the messages and tap on the new ‘Translate’ button. Choose your preferred language, and the message will be translated instantly. You can also decide to save your preferred language option, so it is saved for future translations.
Message translations in WhatsApp are rolling out to Android and iPhone users. There is no word on when it will be available on the Mac and Windows apps or the web.
At rollout, Android users will be able to translate messages in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users can translate in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
WhatsApp promises that more languages will be supported soon.
