Samsung on Wednesday announced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at its Unpacked event. The foldable device features an updated design and improved cameras but maintains the same price at $1,799 as the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has outer and inner displays like previous generations. Compared to the previous generation, the phone is now shorter and wider, with the outer display having a 6.2-inches size and a 23.1:9 aspect ratio. The inner display is wider with a 7.6-inches panel and a 21.6:18 aspect ratio. The improved display means content can be seen better, and tablet apps can work better on the device.

According to Samsung, the inner display is brighter and has an “optimized layer structure” meant to reduce damage. The under-display camera still comes at 4MP as the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but it is less visible now, thanks to an improved display covering. Both the inner and outer display features a Gorilla Glass Victus+.

In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. It has a 12GB of RAM paired with either a 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. In terms of software, the device is powered by Android 12L, a tablet-first OS designed for bigger displays than the usual Android phones. Of course, it features the One UI and version 4.1.1 with a new Flex mode Touchpad that turns the bottom half of the display to a trackpad with a mouse pointer. Samsung is promising up to four years of major Android updates and up to five years of regular security patches.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 50MP main shooter camera and features the same sensor used in the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ flagships. There is also a new 10MP 3x telephoto lens, which lets the phone shoot up to 30x “Space Zoom,” and a third ultrawide camera at 12MP.

In terms of juice, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has the same battery capacity as the Galaxy Fold 3 – a 4,400 mAh battery with 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging; thanks to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 the performance should be better now. The device is water resistant with an IPX8 rating and supports eSIM for network connectivity.

The foldable device will be available in Graygreen, Biege, and Phantom Black colourways, and there is an exclusive Burgundy colour option on Samsung.com. Pre-orders are underway already, and the device will start shipping from August 26th.
