Naughty Dog is Reportedly Working on The Last of Us Remake for PS5

The Last of Us - PlayStation games of the decade

Originally released for the PS3 in 2013 and remastered for the PS4 in 2014, Naughty Dog is working on the remake of The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5, Bloomberg reports.

The Last of Us got a sequel in 2020 for the PS4 which was also critically acclaimed. The original game is being made into a TV series starring Hollywood’s Pedro Pascal. With Naughty Dog yet to work on a remaster or a patch update for The Last of Us Part II, the news that the original game is being remade for the PS5 comes as a surprise.

According to Bloomberg, a team of around 30 developers that was headed by Michael Mumbauer wanted a bigger role and demanded to work on a remake of The Last of Us for the PS5. Sony approved but never really supported the team and gave the task of the remake to Naughty Dog, the original creator. The team headed by Mumbauer has now been disbanded while Mumbauer has completely left the company.

The report also states Bend Studio, the developer behind Days Gone made an unsuccessful pitch for a Days Gone 2 which wasn’t approved by Sony. Instead, Sony assigned a team from Bend to help Naughty Dog with The Last of Us Part II multiplayer and also assigned another team from Bend to work on a new Uncharted game. The leadership at Bend feared being too absorbed into Naughty Dog’s project and demanded to be taken off the project. Sony granted their wish and they are currently working on a new game.

The remake of The Last of Us is reportedly in development by Naughty Dog and they will be assisted by Sony’s Visual Arts Support Group.
