Contrary to rumours that it has been cancelled, Google has announced Pixel 5A 5G will launch later this year. This is not the first time Google will be reacting to rumours to announce its upcoming Pixel phones.
Pixel 5a 5G is not cancelled. It will be available later this year in the US and Japan and announced in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced.” – reads a statement from a Google spokesperson.
From the statement, it is certain the next Pixel phone will feature a 5G connectivity but it is unknown which version will be available in the US- the Sub-6 or the mmWave version. The global supply chain problem is affecting wider availability but it is not clear if Google will make the Pixel 5A 5G available later in other regions.
Google’s next I/O event takes place next month and it will be a virtual event, the statement from the spokesperson has already ruled out the chances of the phone being released at the virtual event. Google announced the Pixel 4A in August 2020 and released the Pixel 4A 5G in October, it is possible the Pixel 5A 5G follows a similar launch timeline.
Renders reveal the Pixel 5A 5G will be similar to the Pixel 4A 5G but will be slightly thicker and taller. It is expected to come with a 6.2” FHD+ display, dual rear cameras and also include a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone is still expected to be powered by a Snapdragon Qualcomm chipset with the Whitechapel chip reserved for the flagship Pixel phone.
