Google Announces $999 Pixel 8 Pro with Tensor G3 Processor

After a couple of leaks revealing the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, Google today officially announced the devices at its “Made by Google” hardware event in New York City. The devices feature an upgraded process, improved camera, and AI features.

While the Pixel 8 series is similar to its predecessor in terms of design, there is a slight tweak with more rounded corners, but the devices still retain the camera bar at the back with a metal frame. The Pixel 8 Pro has a matte finish with a glass panel at the back and it comes in obsidian black, porcelain, and light blue “bay” colourways, while the Pixel 8 is available in rose, black and hazel colours.

In terms of display, the Pixel 8 features a 6.2-inch screen, which is slightly smaller than the Pixel 7 at 6.3-inch. It has a variable refresh rate of 60 – 120Hz and up to 2000 nits of peak brightness, up from 1500 nits on the Pixel 7 and a 90hz refresh rate. The Pixel 8 Pro has a fully flat 6.7-inch LTP display called “Super Actua” by Google. It offers full variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz and up to 2400 nits peak brightness.

Under the hood, the Pixel 8 series is powered by the third generation of Google’s custom chipset, the Tensor G3 chip which provides new AI enhancements. The Pixel 8 has an 8GB of RAM storage while the Pixel 8 Pro comes with 12GB RAM space. Both devices will launch with the newly announced Android 14 and will receive seven full OS and security updates.

There are significant upgrades to the camera department and the Pixel 8 Pro will be getting an HDR-enhancing “Video Boost”, a Night Sight video, and a Magic Editor in future updates. There is a 50MP main camera at the back, and the ultrawide lens is now 48MP, up from 12MP on the Pixel 7 Pro. The 10.5MP front-facing camera has an autofocus alongside an improved face unlock.

In terms of juice, the Pixel 8 Pro has a 5050mAh battery capacity, while the Pixel 8 ships with a 4575mAh battery. Both feature Battery Share and fast wireless charging, while Google says they provide 24+ hour battery life.

Pricing for the Pixel 8 starts at $699, while the Pixel 8 Pro starts at $999. Pre-orders are underway, and the devices will begin shipping on 12th October.
