Google is adding support for 110 new languages to Google Translate in its biggest expansion. The last time the company expanded language support for Google Translate was in 2022, adding 24 new languages using its Zero-Shot Machine translation. Thanks to the power of AI, the company can now add 110 more new languages making it a total of 243 supported languages.

The addition of the new 110 languages to Google Translate is powered by Google’s PaLM 2 large language model. Google says the new languages “represent more than 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8% of the world’s population.” Around a quarter of the languages are African, including Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda and Wolof.

Google says the PaLM 2 large language model is capable of effectively learning languages “that are closely related to each other, including languages close to Hindi, like Awadhi and Marwadi, and French creoles like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole.”

The Alphabet company says it will continue its partnership with expert linguistics and native speakers to support more languages and spelling conventions in the future.
