It is Now Easier to Transfer Your Photos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos

Google and Apple have teamed up to introduce a new data portability tool that lets users easily transfer their photos on Google Photos directly to iCloud Photos. The announcement is part of the Data Transfer Project and it builds on the already existing tool launched in 2021 that lets users transfer from iCloud Photos to Google Photos.

“Beginning today, Apple and Google are expanding on their direct data transfer offerings to allow users of Google Photos to transfer their collections directly to iCloud Photos,” The Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) announced in a blog post on Wednesday. “This complements and completes the existing transfers that were first made possible from iCloud Photos to Google Photos and fulfils a core Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) principle of reciprocity. The offering from Apple and Google will be rolling out over the next week and is the newest tool powered by the open source Data Transfer Project (DTP) technology stack, joining existing direct portability tools available to billions of people today offered by DTI and its founding partners Apple, Google, and Meta.”

According to a support page from Apple, customers in more than 240 countries will be able to transfer their iCloud Photos to Google Photos. Transferring your photos will not delete or remove them from iCloud, only a copy will be sent to Google Photos. Depending on the size of the files, Apple says it might take between three to seven days to complete the transfer.

How to Transfer from Google Photos to iCloud Photos

Go to Google Takeout. If you have not signed in before, you need to sign in to your Google Account.
After signing in, Click on Continue.
You will be taken to a page where you need to select the third-party service you want to transfer your Google Photos to. Select iCloud Photos.
To continue the process, you need to sign in to your Apple account and authorise the transfer.
Follow the on-screen instructions and the transfer will begin.
