Sony and AMD Tease New GPU Tech for the next PlayStation

The PlayStation 6 is not far away, and Sony has started teasing what to expect for its next PlayStation console. In a new tech presentation, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect, Mark Cerny, sat down with AMD’s Jack Huynh, SVP and GM, Computing and Graphics Group, to discuss the collaboration between Sony and AMD focused on Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay.

Codenamed Project Amethyst, the co-development is all about improving GPU tech for the next PlayStation console for improved ray tracing, upscaling, and overall, a better gameplay experience. Cerny warns that technologies are still in their early days and that they only “exist in simulation right now,” but the results are quite promising, and he is “very excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years’ time.” Sony has stuck to a 7-year gap for new PlayStation console hardware releases, and it will be no surprise to see a proper unveiling or teaser for the PlayStation 6 in 2026, with a release date of holiday 2027.

In the presentation posted on PlayStation’s YouTube channel, Cerny explained that the neural networks found in AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) are incredibly demanding on the current GPU, because they are computationally intensive and require speedy access to an enormous amount of memory. To combat this problem, Sony and AMD have come up with a new technology called Neural Arrays, which makes all units work together like a “single, focused AI engine.” Cerny further expands that the current ray tracing technology has reached its limits, while Huynh talked up the new AMD ray tracing tech being developed for the next-generation PlayStation console.

Studios like Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Guerilla Games, and others are known to develop high-fidelity games with super-realistic graphics. It will be interesting to see how they work with the new GPU tech for the next-generation PlayStation console.
