Apple yesterday in Cupertino, California announced its next-generation iPhone: the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max which are the successor to last year’s iPhone XS and XS Max. The devices feature triple-camera systems, better display, faster processors and improved battery life.
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook says the Pro iPhone was designed in mind for people who want the “most sophisticated technology”. Just like the default iPhone 11, Apple added new colour options: green, silver, space gray, gold and new matte finish on the back of the devices. iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch screen while the 11 Pro Max stretches as much as 6.5 inches. Apple upgraded display on both phones to better OLED panels which brightens to 1,200 nits, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and offers 15 percent more energy efficiency. This improved display is called Super Retina XDR display by Apple.
Both Pro iPhones features Apple’s new A13 bionic processor which it calls the fastest CPU and GPU ever in a smartphone. Apple says its processor has “the best machine learning platform in a smartphone.”
The camera remains the biggest upgrade this year with the Pro iPhones having a triple rear camera system – a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens with 120-degree field of view, accustomed with the wide-angle and telephoto lenses Apple offered last year. The telephoto camera is upgraded with a better f/2.0 aperture which captures 40 percent more light than the iPhone XS camera. Just like the iPhone 11, the selfie camera is now 12MP and is capable of shooting4K and slow-mo videos at 60fps.
Apple also improved the camera software by adding a dedicated Night Mode feature on the camera. There is also a new computational photography feature called “Deep Fusion” which shoots nine images and finally gives out a final output with added detail and less noise. This update does not come with the phones at launch but will be added in a software update coming later this fall.
Additional upgrades are better and improved video shoot from two cameras simultaneously with Filmic Pro, better Face ID and an 18W faster charger packaged with the Pro iPhones. Apple also says the iPhone 11 Pro comes with an extra 4 hours battery life over the iPhone XS while the iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with an extra 5 hours battery life over the iPhone XS Max.
