Twitter Rebrands Super Follows as Subscriptions

twitter fix disappearing tweets

Super Follows, the subscription-based service on Twitter that lets creators charge for exclusive content, is now “Subscriptions”. Elon Musk made the announcement on Thursday, adding that the feature can be found in “Monetization” in Twitter settings.

Twitter announced Super Follows in February 2021, and it allows creators to charge a monthly price of $2.99, $4.99 or $9.99 to provide exclusive content to their subscribers, including special badges. Now rebranded as Subscriptions, Twitter hopes to add newsletters and other features soon as bonus content, according to a FAQ page for the service. It is interesting to see how Twitter plans to implement newsletters. The company acquired newsletter platform Revue in 2021 but killed it shortly after Musk took over the company.

Musk elaborated further on Subscriptions and said Twitter would not take any cut from creators’ earned subscriptions for the next 12 months. “You will receive whatever money we receive, so that’s 70% for subscriptions on iOS & Android (they charge 30%) and ~92% on web (could be better, depending on payment processor),” Musk said. “After first year, iOS & Android fees drop to 15% and we will add a small amount on top of that, depending on volume. We will also help promote your work. Our goal is to maximize creator prosperity. At any point, you can leave our platform and take your work with you. Easy in, easy out.”

Twitter is also expanding the character limit for Blue subscribers to 10,000. Apart from the other perks that come with Blues, subscribers will be able to apply bold and italics formatting to their tweets.
