Twitter is beginning to open up Super Follows, its subscription-based service that lets creators charge for exclusive content. Twitter announced the feature in February and creators can monetize their accounts with it by charging followers for extra content to be part of an exclusive community.
At the moment, Super Follows is available to a select group of creators in the US on the Twitter iOS app. Some eligible accounts are @MakeupforWOC and @myeshachou. Twitter began taking applications for creators in June for a test group but the company plans to roll out the feature to iOS users in other countries in the coming weeks. Eligible creators can charge monthly rates of $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 for subscriber-only tweets and payments are processed via Stripe.
A user must be in the United States, have a minimum of 10,000 followers, be at least 18 years of age and must have tweeted at least 25 times within the last 30 days, and also be in compliance with Twitter’s policy for the feature to be eligible for Super Follows. Twitter for iOS users in the US and Canada can subscribe to a creator’s account that has Super Follows.
Twitter plans to expand Super Follows by adding newsletters, Spaces and more features. Super Follows is one of the numerous ways Twitter has been exploring to make the platform attractive to creators. The company is also working on ticketed Spaces, a tip jar feature and its own newsletter platform.
The company plans to introduce Super Follows to the web and Android soon.
