X Is Making Likes Private

X is making likes private. The social media platform formerly known as Twitter will stop making likes public so people can’t view them on a user’s profile. Director of Engineering at X, Haofei Wang confirmed the move on Wednesday after it was first reported by MacRumours.

Yeah, we are making likes private,” Wang confirmed in a response to a post uncovering the change from MacRumors contributor Aaron Peris. “Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behaviour. For example, many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be ‘edgy’ in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image.

Soon you’ll be able to like without worrying who might see it. Also a reminder that the more posts you like, the better your For you algorithm will become,” Wang added.

In a response to Wang’s reply, former Twitter CEO asked what is the difference between a “like” and a “bookmark” then? Wang clarified that “Like is visible between you and the author, the author will be notified, but not anyone else. Bookmark is only visible to you.”

One of the perks of premium on X for subscribers is the option to be able to hide likes on their profile but it is now looking like the company is taking that away completely. The company has not confirmed when the update will be rolled out to everyone on X.
