Elon Musk has only been in charge of Twitter for a few days, but the self-proclaimed “Chief Twit” is wasting no time to ring around changes. Top executives have already left the company, and there are reports more Twitter employees will be laid off. According to new reports from Platformer’s Casey Newton and The Verge, Twitter is planning to make verification a Twitter Blue feature and raise the monthly subscription from $4.99 to $19.99.

Blue is Twitter’s paid subscription service for power users, coming with many benefits, including the ability to edit tweets. The subscription service was launched in the US last year in November for $2.99, but the price was increased to $4.99 in July. According to The Verge, Elon Musk has given a directive to Twitter employees to make the verification blue checkmark a paid service under Twitter Blue for $19.99 monthly. Verified accounts would be given 90 days to subscribe to the plan or lose their verification badge. Employees working on the product have also been given a deadline of November 7th to make the feature go live or lose their job.

As noted by Newton, Twitter’s @verified account now follows around 428,000 users that carry the blue checkmark, a small number considering Twitter’s 206 million daily active users. On Sunday, Musk tweeted: “The whole verification process is being revamped right now.”

Even before completing the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, Musk has been vocal about changes he would like to see on the platform. The Tesla CEO mentioned in June that Twitter needs to adopt a similar model or WeChat or TikTok if it is to achieve its goal of reaching 1 billion users.
