Twitter owner and CEO, Elon Musk has announced a new Twitter Blue that will cost $8 monthly and will be required for verification. The announcement comes a day after reports came out that Musk was planning on charging $20 for a new Twitter Blue version which will include verification. Twitter Blue currently costs $4.99 for users in the US, and it offers some benefits for power users.
“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” Musk tweeted. “Price adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity,” he added. According to Musk, the $8 monthly Twitter Blue will also include benefits such as:
- Priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeat spam/scam.
- Ability to post long video & audio.
- Half as many ads
- And paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us.
Musk continued and said the new Blue paid service will give Twitter “a revenue stream to reward content creators.” The announcement comes after popular gaming account @Nibellion announced he was abandoning the platform citing the inability to monetize his account and concerns over Musk’s leadership. “After some introspection, I’ve made the decision to focus my time and energy elsewhere and move on from Twitter. This marks the end of my video games coverage and my active participation in this platform.” Nibel shared. In a statement shared on Patreon, he continued: “I have miscalculated the value of my Twitter activity and realize that it is nothing worth supporting by itself for the vast majority of people.” He said on Twitter’s leadership under Musk: “I don’t think that Twitter has yet experienced good leadership, and this trend will not change with Musk either”. I do not trust the platform. I do not trust Musk and his seemingly infinite immaturity.”
After initial reports that Twitter was planning on charging verified accounts $20 monthly, many users expressed their displeasure, including author Stephen King. Musk replied to King: “We need to pay the bills somehow,” Musk said. “Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?” Musk plans to bring new changes to Twitter and carried out a poll about bringing back Vine. No launch date was announced by Musk yet for the $8monthly new Twitter Blue version.
