HBO’s series adaptation of PlayStation’s The Last of Us is a hit. The show premiered on Sunday night, attracting 4.7M viewers, making it the streamer’s second-largest debut since 2020, Deadline reports.

Game of Thrones spinoff, House of Dragon, shattered HBO’s viewership record last year, debuting with 9.986M viewers across linear and HBO Max, making it the biggest in HBO’s history. With 4.7M viewers tuning in to see the opening episode, The Last of Us becomes the second-biggest premiere for HBO in more than a decade since Boardwalk Empire was released in 2010, some way before HBO Go, HBO Now was widely available and before HBO Max was launched, according to Variety.

HBO’s The Last of Us follows the events of the PlayStation game starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Events of the show occur 20 years after the outbreak of the cordyceps virus destroyed modern civilisation. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone in Boston, United States. What seemed like a small task becomes a tumultuous journey, with both needing each other for survival through the journey.

The Sunday night debut for The Last of Us is almost twice that of Euphoria’s second season debut, which had 2.4M viewers last January. Euphoria would eventually average 19.5M viewers per episode in the U.S., bringing it close to the modern-day hit, House of Dragon.

We are thrilled to see fans of the series and game alike experience this iconic story in a new way, and we extend our gratitude to them for helping to make it a success,” Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & HBO Max Content, said. “Congratulations to Craig, Neil and the brilliant cast and crew who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. We look forward to fans around the world enjoying the rest of the season.”

Our focus was simply to make the best possible adaptation of this beloved story for as big an audience as we could,” executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann added. “We are overjoyed to see how many fans, both old and new, have welcomed ‘The Last of Us’ into their homes and their hearts.”

The first season of The Last of Us will have nine episodes. New episodes will air on Sundays at 9PM ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max.
