Despite having its premiere only less than a week on HBO, House of the Dragon has already been given the all-clear for a second season.

Last Sunday, nearly 10 million people tuned in to HBO Max for the first episode, shattering the record for the biggest premiere ever for a new show on the platform. After four days of playback, Variety reports, HBO says the number is now around 20 million.

We are beyond proud of what the entire ‘House of the Dragon’ team has accomplished with season one,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” book from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” universe, “House of the Dragon”, and it focuses on House Targaryen.

There is no news yet on when the second season will start filming on a release date. New episodes from the first season air on Sundays at PM ET on HBO Max.
