The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on HBO and Max this April. Show co-creator Neil Druckmann announced the ongoing CES 2025 event, and HBO Max released a short teaser of what to expect in the second season.
Last June, showrunner and co-creator Craig Mazin confirmed in an interview with Deadline that the second season will be shorter than the first. The final episode of The Last of Us first season dropped in March 2023 with nine episodes. The second season has been confirmed to have seven episodes.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin told Deadline in June. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
The Last of Us season 2 will follow events from the second part of the video game. Like in the video game, the story is expected to be centred around Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they seek vengeance against transgressions committed against one another.
