After confirming the name and tech specifications of its next-generation virtual reality system in January, Sony today officially revealed its design. In a PlayStation Blog post, Senior Vice President at PlayStation, Hideaki Nishino wrote about the inspiration behind the design of the PlayStation VR2 headset and the VR2 Sense controller.
The PlayStation VR2 has a similar design to the VR2 Sense controller, both feature a circular orb shape which is made to represent the 360-degree view of the virtual reality world. Nishino also noted the PS VR2 was designed with the look of the PlayStation 5 family of products in mind so everything fits perfectly alongside each other.
“Our goal is to create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller,” Nishino said. “That’s why we paid very close attention to the ergonomics of the headset and conducted extensive testing to ensure a comfortable feel for a variety of head sizes. We already had a lot of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset by carefully balancing the headset weight and having a simple headband that can be adjustable, so we kept the same concept for the PS VR2 headset.”
Not only has Sony kept the same concept from the first PS VR headset for the PS VR2 headset, the headset’s adjustable scope of the next-generation virtual reality system is also the same which means players will already be familiar with this when plugging in the headphone jack. There are also new features such as a lens adjustment dial which gives users more options when trying to optimize their view.
Sony has still yet to reveal the pricing of the PlayStation VR2 headset but promises to share more details going forward.
