While still celebrating the launch of its PlayStation 5 Pro console, Sony has revealed it has shipped more than 65 million PS5 consoles as of the end of Q2 2024. Compared to the same period last year, console sales dropped by 1.1 million units and by a total of 2 million units in 2024. Things are looking good with the launch of the PS5 Pro, and Sony says sales are “performing slightly stronger” than the PS4 Pro during the same period.
Sony’s revenue rose by 9 per cent, as well as operating profit which increased by 73 per cent to 445.1 billion yen ($2.91 billion). Revenue increase can be attributed to game sales of 77.7 million units, an increase of 14.9 per cent from Q2 2023. Two of the best-performing game sales were the action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, which reportedly sold more than 20 million units in Q2, and the recently released first-party title, Astro Bot with more than 1.5 million copies sold.
Despite increased subscription prices last year, PlayStation Plus subscriptions remained at 116 million. Whilst this is an increase year-over-year from 107 million, growth has stalled since the last quarter.
Sony still has until March 31st for the current fiscal year to end, and performance could be boosted by the launch of upcoming titles such as Assassin’s Creed Shadow and Monster Hunter Wilds, which will be released in February 2025.
