After several leaks and teasers, Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, its “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.” Preorders for the PS5 Pro will start on September 26, 2024, while the console will be available from November 7 for USD 699.99, GBP 699.99, EUR 799.99, and JPY 119,980 (including tax).
PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny detailed the console’s hardware specifications in a live video broadcast. The PS5 Pro has a GPU with 67 per cent more compute units than the PS5 and 28 per cent faster memory. This leads to a 45 per cent faster gameplay rendering. Sony is advancing the ray tracing on the PS5 Pro with more dynamic light reflection, allowing the rays to cast up to three times faster than on the PS5. The PS5 Pro has a new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-powered upscaling that provides super sharp image clarity during gameplay.
For supported games, players will enjoy up to 120 frame rates without compromising on fidelity. Thanks to the PS5 Pro Game Boost, more than 8500 backwards compatible games will be playable on the PS5 Pro. Supported PS4 and PS5 games will also enjoy improved performance and stability. PS5 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7, variable refresh rate (VRR) and 8K gaming.
Some of the third-party and Sony’s blockbuster games will be getting patch updates to take advantage of the hardware capabilities of the PS5 Pro. The games include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. All supported games will have a PS5 Pro Enhanced label on them.
The PS5 Pro will launch with a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. It will be disc-less just like the PS5 Slim but players will be able to purchase the disc drive separately.
