Last month, Sony announced it was working on a next-gen VR headset for the PS5, in a blog post today, the company showcased the controller for the VR system. Sony says it is aiming for “a much deeper sense of presence and a stronger feeling of immersion in VR experiences” which means the new controller features the same haptic feedback and adaptive trigger technology introduced with the DualSense controller.
The new PS5 VR controller which will be worn on both arms has an orb-shaped design with the PlayStation thumbsticks and face buttons at both ends as well as trigger buttons on the underside. Hideaki Nishino, Senior VP Platform Planning & Management at PlayStation says Sony designed the controller with “great ergonomics in mind” The controller has a plastic spiral which the arms fit into when it is worn.
The PS5 VR controller can detect fingers without the player pressing the actual button when the thumb, index or middle fingers is needed, this allows for more gesture controls during gameplay. The VR headset is able to track the controller with the aid of a tracking ring placed across the bottom of the VR controller.
Sony says prototypes of the controller will be shared with developers soon and that it still has more to share concerning the next generation of virtual reality on the PlayStation 5.
