Android OEMs have always been the fans of Qualcomm because their chips serve as the best alternatives for flagship Android devices. This fact is what inspired MediaTek to develop the Helio P90 with the sole aim break the monopoly of Qualcomm.
Fabricated with the 12nm process, the P90 chipset implements the company’s APU 2.0 Al infrastructure which offers ” “a new level of AI experiences that are 4X more powerful” than any product it’s built before. As well as giving batteries extra life, the SoC brings camera capabilities.
For instance, even if there is no chance of a 48MP sensor on a midrange phone, MediaTek claims that the necessary upgrades will ensure the support for 480 fps slow-mo videos and triple ISP for RAW images and better AI photos in dark environments.
When it comes to connectivity, change is not apparent- Category 12 down speed coupled with 4×4 MIMP, dual 4G VoLTE however Bluetooth has been upgraded to 5.0, and all WiFi standards are not supported. Qualcomm has already rolled out the first P90 chipsets which will feature in smartphones from early 2019.
Coming to the tech features, the Helio P90 SoC is an octa-core chip which consists of two Arm A75s clocking at 2.2GHz and six A55s at 2.0GHz. An Imagination Technologies PowerVR GM 9446 will serve as the GPU will the chipset promises efficient multi-core processing with MediaTek’s CorePilot tech.
Support for ARCore depends on each device under normal circumstances. However, the Helio P90 offers the option of allowing new AR applications to work on devices utilizing this chip. MediaTek’s partnership with the tech company, Google also reaches to its image recognition software Lens, which is a confirmed feature of the new SoC.
Here is a comparison between the Helio P90 and its predecessor the Helio P70.
