This year’s flagship iPhones are finally official – the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhones feature support for 5G connectivity and the larger displays, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest iPhone yet till date with a 6.7” display.
Last year, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max came with 5.8” and 6.5” screens respectively, Apple has increased that size this year to 6.1” and 6.7” respectively on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The screens are protected with “Ceramic Shields” which offers durability with 4x drop performance.
The Pro iPhones comes in steel casings against the aluminum found in the iPhone 12. They are available in gray, stainless steel, gold and blue colour options.
Both Pro iPhones are powered by the A14 Bionic chip which according to apple is 50 percent faster than any smartphone in CPU and GPU performance. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max supports both the sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G; Apple says the models feature “the most 5G bands on any smartphone.” The Pro models will support every cellular carrier with Apple stating they “offer the broadest 5G coverage worldwide.”
The LiDAR scanner first introduced on the iPad Pro makes it way to the iPhone 12 Pro models. Explaining how it will work, Apple states it brings “the ability to measure light distance and use pixel depth information of a scene.” “This technology delivers faster, more realistic AR experiences and improves autofocus by 6x in low-light scenes for more accuracy and reduced capture time in photos and videos. This advanced hardware, combined with the power of the Neural Engine of A14 Bionic, also unlocks Night mode portraits, rendering a beautiful low-light bokeh effect.”
In terms of camera, Apple is maintaining the triple camera system like in the iPhone 11 Pro, the LiDAR scanner and LED flash light are housed inside the square glass camera cutout. There is a new seven-element lens Wide camera with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, Apple states this is the fastest ever on an iPhone, for 27 percent improved low-light performance in photo and video; the Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 52 mm focal length Telephoto camera, bringing the optical zoom range to 4x. There is a 12MP telephoto lens with a 65mm focal length which is capable of 2x optical zoom. The is a new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera boasts a 47 percent larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for a massive 87 percent improvement in low-light conditions according to Apple.
The Pro models do not ship with a charger brick like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, but it comes packaged with the USB-C lightning cable. There is support for the new MagSafe tech for wireless charging and its accessories.
The Pro models will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 while the iPhone 12 Pro Max begins at $1,099. The iPhone 12 Pro will start shipping Friday, October 23, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will ship from Friday, November 13.
