Apple Announces iPhone 12 with 5G Connectivity and OLED Display

Apple today finally announced its much anticipated iPhone 12 in a virtual event. The new iPhone replaces last year’s iPhone 11 as the standard model though they share the same 6.1” screen size. Apple has upgraded the display to OLED from last year’s LCD and has also added a 5G network support.

The iPhone 12 pricing begins at $799 and pre-order is open from Friday, 16 October. It will start shipping the upper Friday, October 23 and it will be available in black, blue, green, red and white colours. There will be 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options.

The new iPhone has an aluminium casing and a design which is the same as the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 is 11 percent thinner thanks to its flat sides and it is 15 percent smaller in weight. The OLED display is capable of 1200 nits of brightness and there is support for Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and HLG. The glass is more durable now according to Apple thanks to its ceramic shield which is 4x likely to survive a drop.

The iPhone 12 is powered by Apple’s latest A14 Bionic chip. The chip is built on a 5nm process and Apple says its six-core CPU is the fastest in any mobile phone ever while the four-core GPU is also the best ever according to Apple. The iPhone 12 is the first iPhone ever with a 5G connectivity and there is a Smart Data mode which maintains battery efficiency by switching between LTE and 5G when necessary.

Every year, one of the major talking points on new iPhones is the camera and Apple has made some improvements on the iPhone 12. The design is the same as that of the iPhone 11 with the two rear cameras housed in a glass square cutout. There is a 12MP f/1.6 main camera and a 12MP ultrawide angle camera. Apple is promising up to 12 per cent better low-light performance with the cameras and Night Mode is now available on the front camera.

Apple is introducing a MagSafe system for the iPhone 12 in order to improve wireless charging with built-in magnets which works with supporting MagSafe accessories. Accessories such as cases and chargers attach to the back of the iPhone 12 magnetically. There is also a new dual wireless charger for the iPhone and Apple Watch that uses MagSafe. iPhone 12 will only be shipping the USB-C cable and no power adapter.
