YouTube is testing creators’ voice replies among “a small number” of creators in the U.S. Spotted by The Verge, YouTube says it hopes that the experiment “enables more meaningful relationships between creators and audiences.”
Creators in the test group will now see a new sound wave icon when responding to comments. Instead of typing, a creator can reply with a voice message, and the audience can interact with the audio just like a regular comment. YouTube says only creators can make voice replies on their channel, which is currently only possible via the YouTube app on iOS.
According to The Verge, voice replies made by creators do not seem to be playable on all YouTube clients. A voice reply made by YouTuber ThioJoe was playable on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pixel 6 YouTube app, but there was no option to play the audio in a Mac web browser.
