WhatsApp Now Lets You Send HD Photos

WhatsApp is rolling out support for HD photos. Some users have received the update for some days already, and I got the update on Tuesday. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feature on Facebook and via his Instagram broadcast channel, “sharing photos on WhatsApp just got an upgrade — now you can send in HD.”

Once you receive the update, you will see a new “HD” option at the top of the photo-sharing screen in WhatsApp. Tapping on the HD button gives you two options – the Standard quality (1638 x 2048) and the HD quality (4096 x 5120). Sending in HD preserves the picture quality but takes more storage space, unlike the Standard quality.

Once the photo is sent, the recipient will see an HD label on the photo indicating that the image is of high resolution. If the recipient has a poor connection when the HD image is sent, they can download the Standard quality or upgrade to the HD version. All images are protected under WhatsApp end-to-end encryption.

The feature had been in beta testing for a while and was discovered by WABetaInfo earlier in June.

The company is rolling out globally on Android and iOS over the next few weeks, with HD video support coming soon.
