Twitter is Expanding Downvote Experiment Globally

Last July, Twitter began experimenting with upvote and downvote reactions to replies among a small number of iOS users, the company announced on Thursday it is now rolling the test out to a larger group of users globally including on Android and the web.

When the company began testing downvotes, it said it wanted users to identify relevant replies better. So far, Twitter says people have been using the downvote button on replies they find offensive or not relevant. “This experiment also revealed that downvoting is the most frequently used way for people to flag content they don’t want to see,” the company said.

Downvotes isn’t open to all users yet, but it is looking like Twitter will be rolling out the feature permanently soon. The company said it concludes that users who have tested the downvote button so far “agree it improves the quality of conversations on Twitter. We’re excited to see how others think of it as it becomes available to more of you.”

Downvotes can help keep conversations relevant on the social media platform instead of muting them.
