Twitter will no longer allow “free promotion” of some specific social media platforms at tweet and account level, it announced on Sunday. Henceforth, any account linking to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Donald Trump’s Truth Social, Tribel, Post, Nostr, and aggregators such as linktr.ee, Ink.bio will get a temporary suspension or tweet deletion.
The new policy also means it is no longer acceptable for users to put links to other social media platforms in their Twitter profiles. For now, Twitter did not include sites like OnlyFans, YouTube, TikTok, or Telegram in its new policy, which means users can share links to these platforms.
“We recognize that certain social media platforms provide alternative experiences to Twitter, and allow users to post content to Twitter from these platforms. In general, any type of cross-posting to our platform is not in violation of this policy, even from the prohibited sites listed above,” Twitter shared in a policy page. “Additionally, we allow paid advertisement/promotion for any of the prohibited social media platforms.”
Twitter’s prerogative is now to suspend accounts created for promoting content on other social media platforms. Attempts to bypass the restriction through cloaking, plaintext obfuscation, including spelling out “dot” may attract a suspension. Sharing screenshots of handles from prohibited social media platforms is also in violation of the new policy.
UPDATE: The page with the new policy and tweets from @TwitterSupport has now been deleted. Elon Musk seems to have had a change of heart, and Twitter has now come up with a poll asking if it should enforce the policy.
