We know Sony is working on the next PlayStation Console, the PS5, we just do not know yet when the game will be announced. There are many speculations and rumours already as to features coming with the PS5, but this newly discovered one may be the most important yet. Discovered by GearNuke, Sony filed a patent titled “Remastering by emulation” privately but updated it October, 2nd 2018. This gave a major hint about PS5 backwards compatibility.

One of Microsoft’s marketing edge for its Xbox One Console over Sony’s PS4 is its backward compatibility support, the Xbox one can play older games originally released on the Xbox 360 and older Xbox consoles. One issue about latest gen consoles having the backwards compatibility support is older games competing with the current generation games for sales, some gaming console manufacturers have tried this and reverted back.

The patent registered to Sony Interactive Entertainment America LLC shared more details on the possible PS5 backwards compatibility many gamers have been clamouring for, it reads:

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

The Xbox One by Microsoft may have that edge but Sony’s PS4 has sold twice as much as the Xbox as sold in a report released back in July. The PS5 is expected to come with many features and upgrades on the PS4, In a tweet Jez Corden, Windows Central Writer, there are indications the PlayStation Network will be experiencing a major infrastructure/platform update.
