Netflix announced today its new $6.99 Basic with Ads tier will launch on November 3rd, 2022, in 12 countries, including the UK and the US. The new ads tier joins Netflix’s existing ad-free Basic, Standard and Premium plans. The new Basic with Ads plan will offer all features of the ad-free Basic plan but with some caveats.
For the new ads tier, Netflix says “a limited number” of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, and subscribers won’t be able to make downloads. An average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads will be shown per hour, and streaming quality will be pegged at 720p/HD. At launch, ads will be 15 or 30 seconds long, coming up before and during TV shows and movies.

For advertisers, Netflix says, “we’ll offer broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g. sex, nudity or graphic violence).”
The Basic with Ads tier will also launch in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico and Spain on November 3rd, 2022. The streaming giant is expected to roll out the plan to more countries soon.
