Fans were disappointed not to see any project from Naughty Dog during the PlayStation Showcase last Wednesday. Still, the studio has surprisingly announced it is working on a fresh new game. The PlayStation Studio was expected to showcase its multiplayer project for The Last of Us but has now provided a new update.

“We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game,” the studio announced in a post on Twitter. “We’re incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we’ve realized what is best for the game is to give it more time.

Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.”

It is unclear if the new game the studio is working on is a fresh IP or a game continuing The Last of Us series. After the announcement, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that the multiplayer project has had a setback.

“The team working on the game was scaled back after a recent evaluation, said the people, who asked not to be named because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly,” Bloomberg reports. “A small group remains on the project while the company revaluates the direction. While the game has not been cancelled, many of its developers have been moved to other projects.”

After The Last of Us Part II was released, Naughty Dog remade Part I and released it on PS5 and PC. The studio then went ahead to make an HBO series for the franchise. The studio is one of PlayStation’s best studios, and fans will be eager to hear more about its new project.
