On Wednesday, MediaTek unveiled a 5G chipset at COMPUTEX. This multimode 7nm 5G system on chip (SoC) will support the pioneer set of top tier 5G devices. It also boasts of a MediaTek Helio M70 modem, a Cortex – A77 CPU and the latest APU. With such features, the processor can handle the demands of 5G technology.
This processor works with 5G standalone and non-stand-alone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz networks. However, it supports older systems such as 2G to 4G while expecting the arrival of 5G.
“Everything about this chip is designed for the first wave of flagship 5G devices. The leading-edge technology in this chipset makes it the most powerful 5G SoC announced to date and put MediaTek at the forefront of 5G SoC design,” according to MediaTek President Joe Chen in an interview “MediaTek will power rollouts of 5G premium level devices.”
MediaTek’s 5G chipset offers an Helio M70 5G modem which stands as a power efficient option for the ultra-fast network. The single chip also performs better than a dual chip model, especially in terms of power efficiency.
The first set of these processors will be available for customer samples as from Q3 of 2019 while phone makers will offer devices using this chipset as from next year. But the features of the MediaTek 5G SpC will be revealed fully before 2019 runs out.
For now, all we know is that the processor offers the specs mentioned above while providing download speeds of 4.7 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps upload speeds. It also promises support for advanced AI applications such as the ones that can take less blurry shots of fast-moving objects.
Gaming and video streaming will be hitch-free as this chipset sports an ARM Mali-G77 GPU while the cutting edge 7nm process ensures efficient power usage. Smartphones with the chip will be able to support 4K video encode/decode at 60fps and cameras with resolutions as high as 80MP.
“The industry, OEMs and consumers have high expectations for 5G. We are confident devices powered by MediaTek’s 5G chipset, with its impressive architecture, leading imaging features, powerful AI and ultra-fast 5G speeds, will deliver incredible experiences,” Chen further added.
Consumers will benefit from MediaTek’s latest innovation as it will play a significant role in offering users greater access to 5G technology. Also, the 5G chipset will support LTE and 5G connectivity with multi-mode support for all networks.
The company plans to work in partnership with other brands in a bid to determine the profitability of 5G solutions for various purposes. Also, brands such as Oppo, Vivo, Skyworks, Qorvo, and muRata will work with MediaTek to come up with a front-end module that will support 5G and keep the smartphone slim and elegant.
The latest MediaTek 5G mobile processor was designed for Sub-6GHz 5G networks which will be available in Europe, Asia, and North America.
