Instagram is Changing its Ranking to ‘Value Original Content More’

Instagram take a break

Instagram is rolling out some new features among which is ranking for originality. Company head, Adam Mosseri said in a video outlining the new features.

“If you create something from the scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something that you found from someone else,” said Mosseri in a video shared on Twitter. It is not uncommon for users to repost TikTok videos on Instagram Reels and the company is taking measures to discourage this. “We are going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content,” Mosseri added.

The new ranking algorithm will not only affect users who repost TikToks but also aggregator accounts that curate content from various accounts. Mosseri did not explain how Instagram will detect reposts but TikTok videos have the TikTok logo on them and this can be seen when they are shared on Instagram Reels. In February when Meta made Reels available globally, the company referred to it as “our fastest-growing content format by far,” it does not come as a surprise Instagram is trying to value creators who make original content on Reels.

Apart from ranking originality, Instagram is also rolling out Product Tags to everyone globally. Product Tags was previously available in the U.S only but users can now tag businesses using Instagram shopping on posts. Instagram is also making Enhanced Tags available to everyone so creators can receive proper credits for their work.
