Starting today, Instagram is expanding its product tagging feature to everyone over the next few months, the company announced. Instagram first introduced product tagging on posts in 2016 but only creators could take advantage of the feature. With the roll out in the United States, everyone will be able to tag businesses making use of Instagram Shopping in their posts.
Instagram has evolved since it started as a photo-sharing app only and people can now make purchases directly on the app. When a user tags a product in a post, the business owner will receive a notification. Business owners will be able to control who tags their products in posts and also be able to see all tagged content in their profile under one section. Instagram says the new feature is designed for users to discover products easily and also help businesses to grow.
“Scored a new pair of earrings from a small business you love? Tag the product in your Feed post so your friends and followers can learn more about the earrings and shop them,” Instagram said in an email to TechCrunch. “People come to Instagram to share and discover trends and inspiration. Product tagging will make it possible for anyone to support their favourite small businesses, share how they styled their looks along with the products they used and more.”

According to Instagram, 1.6 million people tag at least one product per week, an impressive number considering the feature was only available to creators in the US until today. If the feature is eventually rolled out to all markets it will help a lot of businesses and products gain organic visibility.
To tag a product in your post, create a normal post as you would. After applying all edits and a caption, tap on “Next” to proceed to the next page. On the next page, tap on the “Tag Products” option – you can now tap on specific products on your post and search for them to add a product tag. Users can tag more than one product in a post and people will be able to make purchases from the post.
