After the company began testing the return of the chronological feed in January, Instagram announced today the feed is once again available to everyone more than five years after it switched to an algorithm-controlled feed. The algorithm-controlled feed is not going away but users will have the option of seeing posts in chronological order in the newly added “Favourites” and “Following” feeds.
“We want you to be able to shape Instagram into the best possible experience, and giving you ways to quickly see what you’re most interested in is an important step in that direction,” Instagram head, Adam Mosseri announced in a blog post. “Favourites and Following are new ways to catch up on recent posts from the accounts you follow,” he added.
The two new feeds can be accessed from the top left corner of the homepage, users will be able to choose either the Following or the Favourite feed. On the Favourite feed, users can add up to 50 accounts which can include best friends and favourite actors. The list of accounts in Favourites can be modified at any time and people will not be notified when they are added or removed. Posts from accounts on the Favourites list will have a star icon and appear chronologically on the home feed.
Mosseri Shares an Update About Instagram
The Following feed shows posts in chronological order from all accounts a user follows. Instagram is not entirely ditching the algorithm and says it will still add “more recommendations to your feed based on your interests” on the two new feeds. Speaking on the main feed in a video posted on Twitter, Mosseri said “it’s going to continue to be ranked. It’s going to continue to be personalised.” He further added that “the average account reaches 50 percent more followers than in the chronological feed world.”
Last Wednesday, the company also introduced the parental control tools Mosseri promised at a senate hearing in December. The update for the two new feeds is available and is being rolled out globally.
