HBO on Friday officially ordered a series based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us video game. The announcement was made by Francesca Orsa, HBO Programming, Executive Vice President.
The Last of Us is touted as arguably the best PlayStation game of all time and a discussion had been going on for a while to adapt the franchise into a TV show. The series will be written by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann and HBO’s Chernobyl Craig Mazin. The show will be executive produced by both writers alongside Carolyn Strauss from HBO Chernobyl’s and Game of Thrones as well as Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
The series will be a collaborative effort between HBO and Sony Pictures Television (PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and Naughty Dog).
“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own,” said Orsi. “With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of ‘The Last of Us’ games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We’re delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story.”
In July, while speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Chernobyl Special, Craig Mazin confirmed the series will only seek to “fill things out and expand” so the story is enhanced rather than undo what Naughty Dog has done with the gaming franchise.
“We’re thrilled to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring ‘The Last of Us’ series to life,” said Jeff Frost, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios and Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions. “PlayStation’s innovative storytelling and ingenuity is a natural complement to SPT’s creative focus. Our collaboration is a great example of our ‘One Sony’ philosophy at work. We look forward to developing even more iconic game IP in the future.”
HBO confirms the series will focus on Joel and Ellie’s journey from The Last of Us game, which sees them follow a difficult journey while trying to smuggle each other out of an oppressive quarantine zone across a post-apocalyptic United States.
The series will be available for streaming on HBO and HBO Max. Naughty Dog followed up with a Part II to the game in June and is now the PlayStation 4’s fastest-selling exclusive game ever.
