Disney+ will be getting a cheaper ad-supported subscription later this year, the company announced on Friday. The tier will first come to the US before expanding to other countries in 2023.

Disney has yet to reveal the pricing or exact launch date for the new tier but the company said it will be announced at a later date. Disney+ currently has a standard ad-free plan that costs $8 or $80 annually. Earlier in January, the company announced it will be expanding to 42 more countries this summer including Poland and the United Arab Emirates in order to increase its subscriber base.

Introducing a cheaper ad-supported plan is not new for streaming services, HBO Max rolled out a $10 monthly ad-supported plan last June, while Disney-owned Hulu has long been known to offer an ad-supported plan.

As of Disney’s Q1 2022 earnings, the streaming service recorded a total of 129.8 million subscribers. The company is targeting around 230 million to 260 million subscribers by the end of its 2024 fiscal year and would hope the cheaper ad-supported plan would help achieve its goal.
