Apple is working on its own generative AI chatbot that engineers are calling “Apple GPT,” Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The project is still far from being announced, and sources say multiple teams are working on it.
Apple has built its large language model (LLM) “Ajax” framework using Google’s JAX framework. Bloomberg notes that a team is dedicated to addressing potential privacy concerns concerning the generative AI chatbot.
While Microsoft and Google have released their generative AI tools, Apple has held back from announcing anything. The company has silently introduced advanced AI in products like Apple Photos and its recently announced Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. Apple’s most notable AI system is Siri, but the voice assistant has not developed much recently.
Bloomberg’s report comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook told Good Morning America in a recent interview that the company is “looking closely” at AI technology. Apple’s generative AI project is reportedly led by John Giannandrea, the company’s head of machine learning and AI, and Craig Federighi, its senior software engineering executive.
According to the report, Apple GPT works like OpenAI’s ChatGPT by answering questions based on data it has been trained on. Not much is known about the tool, but Apple is looking to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.
