Instagram is officially giving everyone the option to hide like counts after testing the feature for more than two years. The option is available on Facebook as well and Instagram says it will “let people what works for them.”
“We tested hiding like counts to see if it might depressurize people’s experience on Instagram,” says an Instagram blog post. “What we heard from people and experts was that not seeing like counts was beneficial for some, and annoying to others, particularly because people use like counts to get a sense for what’s trending or popular, so we’re giving you the choice.”
The update which is rolling out from today will let Instagram users hide like counts on all feed posts. Users will also be able to hide like counts on their own posts, so others cannot see how many likes they have on individual posts. These stats will still be accessible to the account owner.
To hide like counts on all posts, go to Settings and access the new Posts section. There is now an option to toggle on/off Hide Like and View Counts. For individual posts, the option is available on the post menu.
When the company began the first trial in Canada, Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri said, “We want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about”
Instagram says it is working on improving people’s experience on the platform by funding more external research, through this the company plans to improve its policies and products to support its community.
