Instagram is giving users the ability to drop comments on their friends’ Stories. Previously, replies to Stories would appear in the DM as a private message. For comments on Stories, they will appear public, and they will also be temporary for up to 24 hours before disappearing just like the story.

In a video shared on threads, Instagram clarified that only followers that you follow back can drop comments on your Stories. Anyone who can see your Stories will be able to see the comments on the Stories. The ability to drop comments on Stories without them being sent as a private DM makes it fun to interact with Stories rather than dropping the usual hearts for likes.

An Instagram spokesperson told The Verge that users will have the option to turn comments on or off on Stories they share. Comments on Stories can also be preserved by saving the Story as a highlight.

Instagram has recently added several new features. The company recently added a feature that lets users add text over photos and expanded the number of photos and videos in a carousel post to 20.
