TikTok is rolling out some new updates to direct messages (DM) that will make the feature better. Among them is a new group chat feature with up to 32 people, a feature the company says is “highly requested.”
While group chat isn’t available to everyone yet, the company is making it possible to include up to 32 people for users that have the feature. To start a group chat, go to inbox in the TikTok app and tap on the Chat button at the top of the screen. From your existing DMs, you can also select a name and tap on the “More Options…” button. Select friends to be added to the group chat and tap on “Start group chat” to begin. Only mutual friends who follow each other can add one another to group chats.
Another way to start a group chat is by tapping on the “Share” button or by pressing and holding on a video post to display its options. From the available on-screen options, select “Create group chat with friends” and select the friends to be added to the group chat. Enter an optional message and tap on “Send.” You can also join an existing group chat through an invite from the inbox.
Just like regular DMs, group chat is not available to users aged 13-15 years. For 16-17 year olds, only their friends can add them to group chats just like everyone else. These older teens cannot join group chats unless the group includes at least one mutual friend. Teens must review and approve new joiners to an existing group chat. Additional safety features such as muting, blocking, and reporting will be available in group chats.
Another feature coming to DMs on TikTok is stickers. You can now create and upload your custom stickers for everyone to use on TikTok.
