Instagram Is Experimenting with Vertical Profile Grids

Instagram take a break

Instagram is testing a new vertical profile grid that shows posts in rectangular format instead of the current square layout. In an Instagram story on Friday, company head Adam Moserri said the current square grid is “pretty brutal” because most of what is uploaded on Instagram is now vertical, either 4 x 3 images or 9 x 16 full-screen videos.

According to an old post by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram might have started working on the test since 2022. A user posted a screenshot of the vertical profile grid on Threads, which might indicate that a wider rollout is imminent. An Instagram spokesperson told The Verge that the feature is currently being tested among “a small number of people,” and that the company will listen to feedback before a wider rollout.

The news of the vertical profile grid may be a bad one for users who have carefully curated their profile layout to be aesthetically pleasing based on the current square format but Mosseri says he “would really like to do better by the content today.” Mosseri added that the current square grids are from a long time ago when users could only upload square photos to Instagram.

Instagram removed the limitation to only upload square photos in 2015, allowing people to post full-size landscape photos and portraits.
