A few days after rolling an algorithm-generated timeline for iOS users, Twitter has rolled back the decision. The update was scheduled to arrive on the web and Android “soon” but the company received a lot of backlashes forcing it to reverse the decision. In the update, the algorithm-generated “Home” timeline would appear by default while the reverse-chronological “Latest” feed appeared in a separate tab.
“We heard you –– some of you always want to see latest Tweets first,” the company said in a tweet on its support account. “We’ve switched the timeline back and removed the tabbed experience for now while we explore other options.”
Twitter first began testing the “Home” and “Latest” timeline last October before finally rolling it out to iOS users on March 10th. When users on iOS started noticing their feed defaulted to the algorithm-controlled “Home” timeline, it started receiving backlash. Lots of users come to Twitter to follow breaking news as it is happening in the world but they could no longer follow properly with the algorithm feed.
It is not uncommon for an internet platform to release a new feature and roll it back, and it won’t be the last time such will happen on Twitter.
