Twitter is giving all users the ability to add one-time content warnings to tweets that contain “sensitive” content. The company began testing the feature last December but it’s now rolling out the feature to all users on Android, iOS, and the web.
Tweets that contain photos or videos with nudity, violence, and “sensitive” are mostly regarded as sensitive content and some users may find this disturbing or not-safe-for-work (NSFW). To add a content warning to a tweet, attach a photo or video and when you want to edit, a flag icon is available in the menu which can be used to add the warning to sensitive media. According to TheVerge, users can tag multiple warnings to each media attachment in a tweet but Twitter will place a single warning over all when the tweet is sent out.
After a tweet with sensitive media is sent out, the photos and videos will appear obscured until users decide to view them after seeing the warning. This is very helpful since users had to add a warning text on tweets with sensitive media. Twitter will hope this will bring some organization to its platform and community.
