Giant phone manufacturer, Transsion Holdings have had their flagship product, Tecno entered top 10 Global Smartphone Shipment for the first time. This was made known by research firms, International Data Corporation (IDC), Counterpoint Research and Canalys. This research was conducted at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2018.

This research indicates that Tecno has joined the list of popular devices such as Samsung, Apple, LG etc. and can be regarded as a strong competition. Tecno is ranked 10th on the Global Shipment list. Figures show that 4.4 million units of Tecno phones were sold as at the 2nd quarter of 2018 (End of June).

As of the 2nd quarter of 2017, 2.8 million units of Tecno phones were sold. These figures indicate that there was a 59% Year Over Year growth rate. Flagship Tecno devices that have already been released this year include Tecno Pouvoir 1 and 2, Tecno Camon X and X Pro.

These statistics indicate that Tecno is a force to reckon with in the smartphone world. Aided by recent partnerships made with various organisations which include Manchester City FC, the Shenzen based company was also reported to be dominating the African smartphone market share according to Canalys report done some months ago.

The statistics provided by Counterpoint Research showing the top 10 Global Shipment reports that Samsung devices lead the pack with 71.6 million units sold as at Q2 of 2018. However, there was a dip in sales recorded when compared to 2017 where 80.4 million units of Samsung phones were sold. The Year Over Year growth rate stands at -11%.

This deficit is due to the decline in sales of their flagship device, S9 which was released earlier this year. Analysts estimate that only 31 million Galaxy S9 smartphones were sold since its release in March. This makes it the lowest-selling phone since the Galaxy SIII.  However, with the giant Korean mobile company set to release the Note 9 August 9, there might be an increase in sales.

Next on the list is Huawei. The Chinese Smartphone company which overtook Apple recently to become the second-largest smartphone maker only after Samsung churned out various flagship devices. This is the first time a smartphone has come in between Samsung and Apple for the first time in 7 years. Huawei phones sold 54.2 million units in the first two quarters of 2018. There was a 41% increase in YoY growth.  This growth was made possible by the massive sales of its flagship, P20 and P20 pro which sold 7 million units.

Apple slipped to number three in Q2 of 2018. Its flagship, iPhone X was its best seller. The company sold 41.3 million units as at Q2. Apple’s yearly growth was recorded at 1%. Coming fourth and fifth on the list are Xiaomi which sold 33 million smartphones at 43% YOY growth rate, Oppo which sold 29.6 million units with a yearly growth deficit of -3%.

Rounding up the list are Vivo, LG, Lenovo and HMD. Noteworthy is HMD who manufacture Microsoft devices. In Q2 of 2017, they sold about 500,000. However, there was a surge in sales at the end of Q2 of 2018. Over 4.5 million devices were sold. This indicates a 782% YoY growth rate.
