Flip phones are a new breed of devices and among the best phones you can get today. With how mobile phone companies release big phones into the market, flip phones are innovative ways to have portable phones you will love.
After the launch of the TECNO Phantom V Fold, the company’s first foldable phone, TECNO’s premium sub-brand, Phantom, launched its first-ever flip phone and latest flagship foldable device. This is an important message from the popular Chinese brand to mobile phone users that the firm can compete with big-name manufacturers like Samsung.
Additionally, the groundbreaking Phantom V Flip 5G, released with impressive features in late September, proves Nigerians can use foldable smartphones at a cheaper price.
After using the phone for a week, the TECNO Phantom V Flip 5G ticks all the boxes in its price range.
But is it worth buying? Let’s find out in this review.

Let’s dive deeply into the flagship TECNO Phantom V Flip 5G to see what it offers.
The Phantom V Fip features a stunning cosmos-inspired design and a unique circular cover screen, making it very classy and premium at first sight. Its exceptional design quality was why it was nominated for the “German Design Awards”.
The iconic black variant of the Phantom V Flip has some parts on the rear and front of the device made of well-crafted lychee leather with a lovely texture. This makes the phone durable, and it also has a purple unit called the Mystic Dawn that comes in a glass finish.
On the back is a huge round camera module that attracts fingerprints. It looks better when you use the phone with the case. The phone closes fully without any visible gap, but a crackling sound can be heard when you shift the phone to the left or right, which we aren’t sure is normal.
The hinge is built perfectly, allowing the device to stay in place after folding. It can stay in any position, and you have that guarantee that it won’t break. That is quite impressive, as it makes it more comfortable to use. According to TECNO, the Phantom V Flip has been folded over 200,000 times, and the screen was not damaged.
On the right side are the volume and power buttons. The volume button doubles as the fingerprint scanner. It is very light to carry around and fits perfectly in the pocket. Overall, the build quality of the Phantom V Flip is solid, but it can be better for a premium device.
The cover display is a 1.32-inch AMOLED sub-screen with a 60Hz refresh rate protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The screen brightness can get as high as 800 nits.
The cover screen has multiple functions. When you swipe down, you will see the quick settings and can swipe up to see your notifications. It features a collection of useful widgets you can customize by going to settings to show only the ones important to you. Users can change the display design by visiting the cover screen personalization settings.
The main screen is a 6.9-inch AMOLED LTPO display with 1000 nits of peak brightness, a variable refresh rate of 10 Hz to 120 Hz and 360 Hz touch sampling using any of your fingers. The LTPO technology automatically adjusts the refresh rate depending on the user’s usage and helps to save battery power. The colours it shows are vibrant, and the screen is responsive to touch.
You can watch and enjoy HDR videos on YouTube and social media. Additionally, you can see the screen display clearly with high brightness for outdoor usage.
On the display, a line runs across the centre of the Phantom V. Flip at the hinge point where it folds. TECNO did a good job of making the crease much less visible when the device is unfolded. We hope the next foldable device eliminates that to make the viewing experience perfect.
The front-facing camera is a 32 MP dual-flash autofocus, capturing clear and smooth selfies under ideal lighting conditions. However, the colours on the image could have been better, especially under the skin tones. With its front-facing flash, you can take selfie pictures with this smartphone in the dark.
According to the company, the camera’s integrated micro-slit dual-flash is TECNO’s first front-facing flashlight in a flip device, complemented by a super flashlight algorithm to create the ideal lighting with perfect exposure. This will aid content creators in achieving greater clarity and detail in selfies and vlogs for their audience.
Regular phone users might need a tripod to take selfies or make videos. With the Phantom V flip, you only need to put the phone on a flat surface to record or capture images. Alternatively, you can accomplish that using gestures by raising your hand to take pictures or shoot videos.
The Rear camera has a 64MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera that captures crisp, smooth images that stand out. It offers better processed and higher-quality images compared to the selfie camera. You can also see a preview of yourself on the rear camera through the cover screen before taking a picture. In daylight, the selfie and rear camera produce great shots with good colour production.
Furthermore, the freeCam system allows users to explore hands-free creativity at different angles while capturing unique pictures. The camera has various modes such as AI CAM, AR shot, portrait, super night, pro, super macro, film, sky shop, dual video and more. Taking pictures using the Sky Shop feature was fun, which changes the sky to different conditions such as sunny, rainbow, Milky Way, starry, twilight, orbit, meteor, aurora and more.
The phone has a MediaTek Dimensity 8050 6nm chipset and 256GB of internal storage with no slot for an external microSD card. Multitasking on this device by floating windows, splitting the screen, and navigating between apps is smooth and seamless, as it comes with 8GB of RAM that can be expanded to 16GB of RAM using MemFusion (TECNO virtual RAM feature). Whether switching between applications or playing high-graphics-intensive games, the phone’s RAM ensures a lag-free experience.
The Phantom V Flip is not a gaming device, but it performs decently. You should also know that it is the first V flip device with an ultra-thin vapour chamber (VC) cooling system. This should help the device dissipate heat. However, it sometimes gets warm at the top part of the device when playing high-end games. Cooling needs to be improved as it is a premium device.
The overall performance of the Phantom V Flip is okay for day-to-day tasks, as it allows you to maximize your productivity and enjoy a seamless user experience.
The TECNO Phantom V Flip comes with HiOS V 13.5.0, based on Android 13. The TECNO User Interface could be more attractive and can be improved, but it does the job. It also comes with light bloatware.
It has the Ella assistant, which features Chat GPT and a voice assistant to help you get your tasks done by simply asking. It can also handle the translation of languages.
The fingerprint scanner feature of the phone, used primarily for biometrics and security, is very fast and responsive. The button placement to unlock the V Flip using your fingerprint feels an inch away from the thumb when holding the phone, so the face unlock was an alternative. However, face unlock works perfectly during the day and with good lighting but struggles in the dark.
The Phantom V Flip is equipped with a well-optimized 4000mAh battery. The battery life of the Phantom V Flip is impressive during everyday usage. Despite regular usage of the device for taking photos, watching videos, playing games, using different social media apps, and playing music throughout the day, we had enough battery to last.
The 45W fast charger charges the 400mAh battery inside this smartphone from 0 to 100% in 50 minutes. This ensures extended usage without the need for frequent charging. The only day we had to recharge twice was while testing the phone by playing games.
As earlier stated, it has a single SIM card tray with no memory card expansion. TECNO may believe 256 GB internal storage is more than enough for the user buying the Phantom V flip.
It has two microphones, a USB C port, and dual stereo speakers. These speakers are okay, but increasing the sound to the maximum becomes distorted. We advise you to get headphones or use an external speaker to enjoy your music. The audio quality of the V Flip is okay, with a feature that cancels noise. The phone connectivity features allow you to stay connected, productive, and entertained anywhere you go.
The 8GB RAM and 256GB storage TECNO Phantom V Flip 5G is the most affordable flip device in the Nigerian market, priced at 569,000 naira.
Visit any authorized TECNO store nationwide near you to purchase the device.
A few of the limitations of the device we noticed are that it doesn’t support e-SIM, has no video stabilization, which would have been very helpful for content creators, and has no IP rating feature. Furthermore, some parts of the phone get warm when playing games or watching videos for a long time. But since it’s not a gaming device, this can be overlooked.
When the case is attached to the phone, the Phantom V Flip sometimes isn’t straight when unfolded. It looks slightly bent, but it’s only observed with the case. This might be due to the hinge, and we hope TECNO considers working on that in the future.
You can now agree that the TECNO Phantom V Flip is the most affordable option you can get right now in the market without breaking the bank. It is generally packed with impressive specifications. From its attractive design, build quality, camera performance, stunning display, powerful processor, and long-lasting battery life, the Phantom V Flip 5G is a standout device.
The Phantom V Flip is so good that it can be compared to a flip device with a higher price. This is a perfect, unique device for those seeking value for their money.
Over to you! Is it worth buying?
