Opera wants users of its browser to be comfortable and has already integrated platforms like TikTok, WhatsApp and Telegram. In a blog post, the company announced it is working on integrating AI-generated content services into its mobile and web browser.
Opera is adding a new “Shorten” button in the address bar. Clicking on Shorten will bring up a sidebar with ChatGPT that will generate a bulleted summary of the webpage users are looking for, according to a demo video shared in the blog post.
“We see the rise of Generative Intelligence as the beginning of a new future in which consumer app developers like Opera will be able to build experiences on top of AI-based platforms. We are excited to see the rapid roll-out of developer programs for solutions such as Google Bard, for example, and are starting to build and roll out new experiences in web browsing that not very long ago seemed impossible to achieve,” Opera’s Head of Strategic Partnerships and AI ecosystem, Per Wetterdal said in a statement.
Google recently announced Bard, its AI chatbot powered by LaMDA, and is working on integrating AI features into search. ChatGPT has gained huge popularity since its release, and Microsoft has announced a new AI-powered Bing and Edge browser. It is no surprise Opera is integrating AI-generative content into its browser. It remains to be seen if the Opera browser would convert Chrome users to itself.
Opera’s Shorten is not available to all users yet, but the vice president of marketing and communications, Jan Standal, tells The Verge it will “launch in browsers very soon.” The company is also working on other AI-powered features to “augment” its browser experience.
