OpenAI has launched its search engine, directly integrated inside ChatGPT. The company says the new feature will provide you with “fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would have previously needed to go to a search engine for.” ChatGPT Search is available to users with ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, Team Users, and SearchGPT waitlist users from today. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the “next few weeks” with access for Free users available “over the coming months.” The feature is available on the web, on desktop and mobile apps.
SearchGPT aims to combine AI answers with up-to-date information from relevant sources across the web. Based on the prompt, ChatGPT will automatically decide whether to search the web or not. Users can also manually trigger the web search feature by clicking on the web search icon.

OpenAI says the search model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, “post-trained using novel synthetic data generation techniques, including distilling outputs from its OpenAI o1-preview.” SearchGPT uses third-party search providers and content provided by OpenAI partners to provide real-time information users are looking for.
The company says it was able to integrate SearchGPT into ChatGPT thanks to feedback it got from the SearchGPT prototype. “We plan to keep improving search, particularly in areas like shopping and travel, and leverage the reasoning capabilities of the OpenAI o1 series to do deeper research,” OpenAI announced in a news post. “We also plan to bring our new search experience to Advanced Voice and canvas, as well as to Free and logged out users in the future.”

OpenAI has partnered with data providers so that SearchGPT can provide up-to-date information and visual designs with categories such as weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps. Searches will include links to sources so users can learn more.
OpenAI says SearchGPT will connect people with “original, high-quality content from the web” in a way that “makes it part of their conversation.”
